'STRONG HEAD, STRONG HEART, STRONG EMOTION' - Dr Rajani Thiranagama
Barefoot Gallery, Colombo 2024
Strong Heart, Strong Head, Strong Emotions is a series that explores the powerful lives of 10 women from Sri Lanka, inspired by the words of Dr. Rajani Thiranagama. The resilience and power of these women encapsulate the very fabric of our society. Ranging from a celebration of creative pursuits, womanhood and motherhood - these women are inspirational reminders that Sri Lankan women often carry a heavy load, oftentimes going unnoticed. This is an attempt at celebrating their stories and accomplishments, as well as standing in solidarity with the grief and burden that they must carry.
These pieces were created in collaboration with the artisans at Ira Industries, a production house with a specialization in crafting batik textiles. Using a contemporary spin on traditional batik dyeing and fabric paint, these pioneering women’s legacies are explored through a series of colourful textiles.
An act of archiving, using the most feminine and divine medium of fabric.

BATIK

Chandramani Thenuwara
This is my first foray into learning about Batik craft. I was invited to paint a portrait of veteran textile designer Chandramani Thenuwara for her retrospective exhibition at the Colombo National Museum's Special Exhibition Gallery. This piece was created in collaboration with Ira Industries.
