Minal Naomi Wickrematunge is an artist from Colombo, Sri Lanka. She has been active in the creative field since 2016, following her degree in Interior Design. Her practice reflects her identity as a South Asian woman and explores themes of gender, justice, identity, politics, and freedom of expression—shaped by her upbringing in a family of journalists and media professionals.
Her debut exhibition, Sensuous, opened at the Lionel Wendt Gallery in 2018. She later presented Post-Colonial Identities in The Hague in 2023, and most recently Strong Heart, Strong Head, Strong Emotions – Rajani Thiranagama at Barefoot Gallery, Colombo, in 2024. Her work has also been featured at Colomboscope (2016) and in the Human Rights Day exhibition curated by Chandragupta Thenuwara. She was selected as an ambassador for The Fearless Collective, a transnational artist movement that creates murals highlighting underrepresented and minority women across South Asia and beyond. In addition, she has collaborated with award-winning documentarian Kannan Arunasalam on multiple projects.
In 2024, Minal received the NUFFIC Scholarship for Cultural Heritage, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Through this, she completed her MA in Applied Museum and Heritage Studies at the Reinwardt Academy, Amsterdam University of the Arts.
She was also invited as guest artist to create a portrait of leading batik artist Chandra Thenuwara for her retrospective exhibition at the National Museum of Colombo. Her tapestry was displayed alongside the works of the veteran textile designer.
Minal works across diverse media, including painting, digital art, textiles, and, most recently, zines.
